Notes for Harrison William II ROACH
Harrison W. Roach Jr. “Mickey” born on May 1, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed away on July 25, 2017 at his home in Cape May Court House surrounded by his family. He was a building contractor and founding partner of Roach Brothers Builders for over 30 years.
He was a former, Boy Scout Leader and Little League Coach. He and his wife Betty raised their family in North Wildwood, New Jersey before retiring to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 1982.
Mickey was an avid golfer and active in many organizations including being a past president of the Myrtle Beach Chapter of American POWs.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years Catherine Elizabeth Roach “Betty”, his son Harrison W. Roach III (Beverly), his sister Dolores and his grandson Robert William Roach.
He is survived by his son’s Dale A. Roach Sr. (Viki) of North Wildwood and R. David Roach Sr. (Lori) of Cape May, New Jersey, five grandsons Gary R. Roach (Debbie) of Tampa, Florida,
Richard Roach of Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, Dale A. Roach Jr. (Eva) of Melbourne, Florida, Drew D. Roach Sr. (Roselea) of North Wildwood, New Jersey, Richard D. Roach Jr. (Krystalynne) of Cape May and 4 granddaughters Kimberlea Aguado (Ricardo) of Cape May Court House, Dana A. Metz (Stephen) of Cape May Court House, Crystal Lynn Slaney (Ryan) of Cape May, Denielle Marie Young ( Neil) of Cape May and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Edward Roach of North Wildwood and Norman Roach of Cape May Court House and his sister Jean Rhile of Cape May Court House.
Mickey was a tail gunner on a B17 in World War II stationed at Grafton Underwood, England with the 384th Bomb Group. Mickey had successfully completed 25 missions over Germany when his B 17 bomber was shot down over Germany on December 12,1944 and he became a prisoner of war at Stalag 1. The Russian army liberated him on May 1, 1945. Mickey was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal and numerous other decorations.
Mickey was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and American Prisoners of War. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to American Legion Post 0184, 4200 Atlantic Avenue, Wildwood, NJ 08260 Funeral services will be held 11am Saturday July 29, 2017 at the Ingersoll-Greenwood Funeral Home, 1201 Central Ave., N. Wildwood, NJ where friends may call from 9:30am. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery, Middle Township, NJ. Condolences ingersollgreenwoodfh.com
