"Old Soldiers never die, they just fade away" Waide G. Fulton, 94, of Oxford, died peacefully on March 26, 2011 at Jennersville Regional Hospital after a short illness.

He was born November 23, 1916, in Pilot, Maryland. He was the son of the late Andrew C. and Eva Belle Sprout Fulton.

Waide was the husband of Lucille H. Fulton with whom he shared 49 years of marriage.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan F. Glass (Joseph), of Millersville and Sandra F. Day of Oxford and step-son Richard D. Terry (Ann) of Oxford. He is also survived by three grandsons, Samuel Terry (Heather), Andy Terry, Michael Day and one great-granddaughter, Cora Terry. He was preceded in death by his sister Hazel G. Fulton Holland and son-in-law William A. Day.

Waide was a graduate of Rising Sun High School, Rising Sun, MD, Class of 1934. He was employed by Sun Ship, Chester, PA before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and selected for the Army Air Corps. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was trained as an armored gunner and assigned to the 447th Bomb Group, 708 Squadron, Eighth Air Force stationed at Rattlesden, England. He served as a right waist gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. Waide was wounded while on a bombing mission to Berlin when his plane, the Mississippi Lady, was shot down April 29, 1944. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received. He was a prisoner of war, Stalag Luft IV, Germany for one year and was marched 500 miles over 81 days. After being discharged from military service in 1946 from Valley Forge Military Hospital, he worked in the Post Office, Bainbridge, MD transferring to the Oxford Post Office in 1949. He retired as Assistant Postmaster in 1973 after 27 years of Postal service.

As a boy living near the Susquehanna River, Waide developed a lifelong love of fishing. An avid reader, he read numerous newspapers and books related to local history and his varied hobbies including collecting arrowheads, cooking, gardening and raising orchids.

Waide and Lucille enjoyed traveling to Bomb Group reunions in England, fishing in Alaska and Ontario, relaxing in Jamaica and touring Ireland, Spain, Italy, Peru, China among others. Waide served as Commander, Gray Nichols Post 1779 Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years. He worked diligently assisting veterans to understand and obtain benefits and services provided by the Veterans Administration. He also belonged to: 447th Bomb Group Association Eighth Air Force Historical Society American Ex-POWs –Brandywine Chapter American Air Museum in Britain, Duxford Airfield, Cambridge, UK Oxford Masonic Lodge No. 353 Union Fire Company No. 1 Improved Order of Red Men – Ockloknoee Tribe No. 212

Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Wednesday, March 30, at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. 86 Pine St. Oxford where family and friends may call from 9:30-11AM.

Interment with full military honors will be in Oxford Cemetery.
