Notes for Robert Whyte EDGE
Robert “Bob” Whyte Edge, 70, passed away on March 12, 2017 at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, PA from complications of early onset dementia. His warm personality and sense of humor will be greatly missed. He leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Patricia Cosgriff Edge of Elizabethtown; his son, Timothy Robert Edge of San Francisco; his daughter, Cynthia Edge Lewis of Coatesville; his 3 grandchildren, Henry Edge Lewis of Coatesville, Nicholas Valentine Edge and Wyatt Mead Edge of San Francisco; and his 3 sisters, Downy Edge Koch of North Granby, CT, Caroline Edge Beideman of Glenmoore, and Sarah Elizabeth Edge of Howard, PA. His brothers, Jacob Edge II, and Thomas Valentine Edge preceded him. Born on September 1, 1946 and raised in Downingtown, PA, the son of Jacob Valentine Edge and Ann Whyte Edge, he loved Chester County and enjoyed living most of his life here. After growing up in “Edge’s Mill,” the longtime family residence in Downingtown, he attended high school at Westtown School (’64) in West Chester. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (’68) in Massachusetts. Bob spent his career running Edge Wallboard Machinery Corporation along with his brother Jay. The pulp and paper industry machinery company was founded by their father in 1955 and was located in the historic mill building across the street from the Edge’s Mill home. Bob took great pride in carrying on the family business and working with many of the same clients that his father and grandfather also called upon. His work required him to travel domestically and to Mexico, Canada, Europe, Russia, and China. Bob enjoyed giving back to the local community and was a very active member of Rotary Club of Coatesville, where he served as President, President of Rotary’s Gundaker Foundation, and District Chairperson for Rotary’s Interact youth outreach program. Bob was a Board Member and former President of Handi-Crafters, a local organization that provides training and employment for mentally and physically challenged adults. Bob was a member of the Brandywine-Goddard Lodge No. 383 F&AM. Bob and his wife had a home in Winter Harbor, Maine and took pleasure in time spent in the wonderful outdoors of Maine with friends and family for many years. He was an avid skier and skied all around the U.S. and in Europe with his son. Bob enjoyed sports of all kinds; he was a soccer referee and a rabid Phillies and Eagles fan. He was an enthusiastic wine collector and enjoyed visiting many wineries, mostly in California. On March 22, 2017 at 11:00am a service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church 409 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, where Bob was a longtime member of the congregation and lector for many years. Visitation will begin at 9:30.
