Notes for Harold Watson TALLEY
Harold Watson Talley of Foulk Manor South passed away at age 94 on March 4, 2017.
He was the son of the late Watson and Jennie (Galbreath) Talley. Hal was born and raised on his parents’ Foulk Road farm. A house his grandfather, Willard T. Galbreath built around 1890 in nearby Ogden, PA is registered with the Chichester Historical Society. Hal graduated from P.S. DuPont High School where he played trumpet in the band. He attended Goldey College. Hal was employed by the DuPont Company for 34 years and played trumpet in the Experimental Station employees’ band. He also played the violin, piano and clarinet. An avid golfer he enjoyed many hours on the courses at the DuPont Country Club where he was a member.
Hal developed a strong fascination with and interest in flying from watching the planes that flew over the farm at tree top level during his childhood. As a young man he took flying lessons at Benedict Airport in Booths Corner, PA. It was no surprise when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served his country in the South Pacific. He was awarded a Purple Heart and an Air Medal after his B24 bomber was shot down and crash landed in Geelvink Bay, New Guinea. Hal and 4 others were rescued by the crew of a U.S. Navy PBY Catalina after floating on a life raft for 29 hours. He also earned Bronze and Silver stars. In 2007 he participated in a filmed interview with Lt. Governor John Carney, which is included in the “Delaware Voices of World War II” educational series.
Hal was predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years Jean Anne (VanPelt) Talley in 2010. Survivors include his two children, Cheryl J. Rex of Wilmington and Ronald H. Talley (Elva) of Parksley, VA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: David M. Rex (Michelle) of New Castle, Kimberly Ayars (Tony) of Wilmington, James Rex (Lisa) of Hockessin, Liz Talley (husband CT Massey) of Ocean View, DE and Karen Tate (Keith) of Middletown. Additional survivors include his ten great-grandchildren: David C., Jessica and Steven Rex, Justin Keeler, Robert and Samantha Rex, Nathan Hahn, Brendan, Averil and Emilia Tate; and four great- great- grandchildren: Jayden and Madison McGuiness and Carson and Aullbrey Rex.
The family would like to give a very special thank you to the entire staff at Foulk Manor South for the kind and compassionate care they gave to both Jean and Hal. Thank you also goes to the Delaware Hospice Transition team. Hal’s daughter Cheryl would like to thank the VFW staff for their help with VA paper work.
A memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church at 12 noon, Wednesday, March 15 where a visitation will be held after 11am. Interment in Chester Bethel U.M. Church cemetery on Foulk Road will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Zion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 2101 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19805 or Alzheimer’s Association, DE Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or your favorite charity.
