Notes for Abram Josiah RHOADS

Abram J. Rhoads, 84, of 101 W. 4th St., Quarryville, died unexpectedly of natural causes Thursday at St. Joseph Hospital.

A former farmer, he was a fuel oil distributor and was employed by Jerome H. Rhoads Inc. since 1960. He was the company's chairman of the board.

He was a member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church since 1935, where he served as a trustee, elder, treasurer and cemetery superintendent.

He also served on the board of directors of Covenanter Presbyterian Church in Quarryville and was a former president of the Lancaster County Christian Endeavor Society.

He was an avid bowler for many years.

Born in Eden Township, he was the son of the late Ervin C. and Clara Book Rhoads.

He was married to Mildred Mendenhall Rhoads for 64 years in August.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Eleanor, married to Robert Holzhauer of Holtwood, and Nancy, married to Eugene J. Minchoff of Quarryville; two sons, F. Abram, married to Patricia Rhoads of Strasburg, and Gerald of Quarryville; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are his stepmother, Jeanette Whetstone Rhoads of Quarryville; two sisters, Martha, married to Leon Landis of Lancaster, and Mary Ruth, married to Frank Michhoff of Quarryville; a half sister, Rita Rhoads Martinez, married to Juan Avila of Quarryville; and a half brother, Jerome, married to Sharon Rhoads of Quarryville.
