Notes for Thomas Sidney II CADWALLADER

Thomas Sidney Cadwallader II died Tuesday, April 14, 2015.

While Sid traveled widely and loved spending time in the Poconos, Vermont, and the Maine woods, his orbit was the place he was born, Yardley. It was here that he was raised on his parents' farm, was an active member of the Quaker meeting, practiced law on its Main Street for 60 years, and where he served his community in countless other ways.

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, it was to Yardley that he brought his bride, Carolyn, who he met while attending Swarthmore College, and it was in Yardley where they raised their four children and resided until moving to Pennswood Village in Newtown in 1989.

Always true to the Quaker values that he received from his parents and that were reinforced first at Fallsington Friends School and George School, Class of 1932, and then at Swarthmore College, Class of 1936, Sid became a conscientious objector during World War II. In the 1950s, he worked with others to rejuvenate Yardley Friends Meeting. Their combined efforts were so successful that the Meeting soon outgrew its space and ultimately built a new meeting house to accommodate its burgeoning membership and activities.

Sid's active role in the Society of Friends is revealed in many ways. During high school, he joined a peace caravan sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee. He served on the Board of William Penn House in Fallsington. It was in this role that Sid played an active part in defusing racial tensions at the time Levittown was being integrated. He was also among the first peace marchers in the symbolic Nazareth to Bethlehem walk held each Christmas season.

Long before the concept of social capital became a catch phrase, Sid was at work on initiatives to strengthen the social fabric of the place he lived. He was past-president of the Bucks County Bar Association. He was active in prison reform and was a founding board member of Good Friend, a halfway house. He joined with others to pledge their homes for bond as a part of the Bucks County Bail Bond Project. He loved the camaraderie of the Yardley Lion's Club and regaled in the capers of the historic Yardleyville Protective Association for the Apprehension of Horse Thieves and Other Villains.

Of all the things Sid did, perhaps he was proudest to be counted among the founding board members of Pennswood Village, a continuing care retirement community. This successful nonprofit health care facility is the home for nearly 350 older adults. Sid and Carolyn, his wife of 76 years, have made Pennswood Village their home for over 25 years.

Sid loved the out-of-doors and seized every chance he could to hike, skate, camp, swim, hunt, and play tennis. On one trip to Maine, Sid purchased a 300 acre piece of pristine woodlands on a remote lake, then created a conservation association of like-minded families to share the joys of remote backcountry vacations.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Laura Parry and J. Augustus Cadwallader, his daughter, Carolyn Bannerman (Titusville, N.J.) and his grandson, David Bannerman.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Keyes Cadwallader; his sister, Laura Clappison; a daughter, Elizabeth Cadwallader (Terry Christensen); two sons, Thomas (Katherine), and Leonard (Mary Ann); a son-in-law, William Bannerman (Christine); eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. June 6, at Pennswood Village 1382 Newtown-Langhorne Rd, Newtown. A separate memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., May 9, at Yardley Friends Meeting, 65 North Main St, Yardley. All are welcome at both services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Friends Service Committee, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia PA 19102, or to the charity of your choice.FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home,
