Notes for Sarah Shippen OKIE
Sarah “Penny” Shippen (Okie) McClain passed on December 8, 2016 at 11:10 pm. Sarah had a difficult life, beginning when she was in her early teens contracting Scoliosis. She was in a body cast for over a year. Late in life she succumbed to both pulmonary and cardiac ailments. She had a great love for family, nature and art. She knew all the Latin names of all the plants that grew wild on the family farm she grew up on. A self-taught artist, who painted and drew animals, nature and portraits very well, Sarah opened a few businesses in her lifetime, such as: an organic vegetable stand before the word was even used much, sold craft arts from the nature on the “Hillside Farm” she grew up on, she worked as a floral designer for Waterloo Gardens and was an employee actress for the Colonial Plantation of Ridley Park. She graduated from Conestoga H.S. and later went to a 2 year Liberal Arts college in Kentucky. My mother taught me to draw cartoon animals by age 5 and, for that love of art, I will always be beholden of her. She was the granddaughter of the famous architect, R. Brognard Okie and daughter of Chas. T. Okie (also a colonial period architect restorer). She had a sister named Laurie and a home that was designed and named after them both by her father who named it “Penn-Laura.” She had one child, as well as being an aunt to my 3 cousins: Daniel and Robert Parella and Krissy Fitzgerald and their children: Jenna (from Dan) Jackson and Dylan from Krissy and her husband Jack Fitzgerald. A memorial ceremony will be held at Willistown Friends Meeting near Providence Rd. between Berwyn and Newtown Square, Pa. on January 2nd, 2017 after New Year’s Day at 10am. For any questions, contact: Warren Rice at (267) 808-0772. Any cards or donations are extremely welcome and should be sent to: P.O. Box 1482 Philadelphia, Pa. 19107. Any thoughts or gifts are greatly appreciated.
