Notes for Margaret RHEIN
Margaret Rhein Williams of West Chester Margaret Rhein Williams, 87, died on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 at the Neighborhood Hospice in West Chester. She had lived in Chester County for 60 years, most notably at Duck Farm in Parker Ford, East Coventry, and for the last 20 years at the former Natalie Leaf House in West Chester. She was the wife of Gerard Williams, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. “Rita,” as she was known, was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of John H.W. Rhein and Margaret Packard Rhein, and the granddaughter of Dr. Francis R. Packard. She graduated from St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock, Va., the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, and the University of Pennsylvania. She engaged herself in various aspects of nursing during her life, starting with using dog sleds and Mission boats to reach patients at the Labrador-Grenfell Mission Hospital in Newfoundland, Canada. Along the way Rita experienced the emergency room, public health, general duty, and geriatric care, as well as tending to her family and the farm. Her interests were wide and varied. Her home, filled with 18th and 19th century furnishings belonging to her family, was once open as a stop on the annual Chester County Day. As a longtime member of the Chester County Garden Club, her name was inscribed on the annual Silver Bowl Award for the most show points. She also enjoyed gardening and volunteer flower arranging at the Barclay Friends Home in West Chester. The theater was a lifelong interest, both as a patron and as a performer, and she was an early member of the Barley Sheaf Players in the county. She worked and crusaded for Planned Parenthood, and for several years taught a class in water aerobics at the YMCA in Phoenixville. Rita was a member and active attender at Downingtown Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. With a warm and joyous smile, Rita displayed a great sense of humor and a love for laughter - even at herself. She freely gave hugs to those she encountered, and gladly accepted them in return. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, G. Rhoads Jr. of Roanoke; two daughters, Margaret P. and Ann N. Cuneo of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Sarah, Kent, Hannah, and David; and a great-grandchild, Felicity. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at Downingtown Friends Meetinghouse, 800 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown. She has donated her body to science. Arrangements are through the Terry Funeral Home, Downingtown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of Chester County, 8 S. Wayne St., West Chester, PA, 19382, or to Downingtown Friends Meeting, 800 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.
