Notes for Leon Clarkson WICKERSHAM
Carpenter, outdoorsman, 86
Leon C. "Wicky" Wickersham, 86, of Northbrook, Chester County, retired carpenter foreman at Embreeville State Hospital and an outdoorsman, died of cancer Thursday at his home.
A lifelong resident of Chester County, he graduated from West Chester High School in 1934.
His wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Swinehart Wickersham, said that as a young man her husband worked in construction and spent his free time exploring the country. He traveled to national parks and reservations and camped on top of Pike's Peak in Colorado.
In 1958, he became a carpenter foreman at Embreeville State Hospital and continued to enjoy outdoor pursuits such as riding motorcycles, auto racing and flying gliders. He also grew strawberries for several years to sell commercially.
He curtailed his outdoor activities after retiring from his foreman position in 1986, but continued to care for his heavily wooded property and "enjoyed sunrises and sunsets," his wife said.
In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by daughter Joan Aquilante; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Philadelphia Memorial Park, 124 Phoenixville Pike, Frazer.
Memorial contributions may be made to Neighborhood Hospice, 795 E. Marshall St., Suite 204, West Chester, Pa. 19380.
