Notes for Howell Barrett Jr. PENNELL
PENNELL HOWELL BARRETT, JR. "BARRY", on July 19, 2016, age 82, after a long struggle with dementia. Barry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet, and their daughters Melissa and Robin. Barry was born in Philadelphia on December 15, 1933, the son of Grace and Howell Barrett Pennell. The family loved the Jersey and Delaware shores, sailed on Barnegat Bay and surf fished on Long Beach Island and Rehoboth Beach. Barry treasured the memories of time spent fishing with his father. He graduated from Episcopal Academy and Wesleyan University. At Episcopal, Barry found lifelong friends, developed his writing skills, played soccer, sang in the glee club, wrote for the school paper and was editor-in-chief of the yearbook. At Wesleyan Barry was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, majored in English, played sports and hosted a classical music show on the university radio station. He wrote for the Wesleyan Argus and edited the yearbook. Barry enlisted in the army and was stationed as a medic in Germany; with so much to see he became an ardent photographer and continued this hobby for the rest of his life. He became a staff reporter for the Germantown Courier, then worked at Curtis Publishing and TV Guide, where he was head of advertising promotion. Barry had a love of the written word, read voraciously and had his work published in magazines including the Saturday Evening Post. After retiring Barry volunteered his time to many organizations, including the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Upper Main Line YMCA, the Chester County Tourism Bureau and the Adventure Aquarium in Camden. A memorial luncheon will be held at a later date for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Episcopal Academy, 1785 Bishop White Drive, Newtown Square, PA 19073 or to Adventure Aquarium, Riverside Drive, Camden, NJ 08103.
