Notes for Thomas M. III MCMILLAN

Dr. Thomas M. McMillan III, 83, of Medford, a retired cardiologist whose introduction of new medical technology and treatments transformed cardiac care in Burlington County, died of heart failure Thursday at Virtua-Memorial Hospital Burlington County in Mount Holly.

Dr. McMillan joined Virtua's predecessor, Memorial Hospital of Burlington County, as its first cardiologist and spearheaded the creation of the cardiac-care unit.

He became head of cardiology in 1963 and added the title of chief of internal medicine five years later.

"He started in cardiology before we had all the fancy bells and whistles," said Frank Fish, the hospital's head of cardiology. Using his stethoscope, Dr. McMillan "mastered the art of listening to a patient's heart, taking their history, and coming up with diagnosis and treatment."

He was inspired to become a physician by his father, Thomas M. McMillan Jr., a onetime professor of cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. Dr. McMillan earned his medical degree at Penn.

During World War II, he served as a consulting cardiologist at the Pentagon. After his discharge, he completed his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, married Sheila Hopkins, and joined Memorial Hospital.

He not only constantly studied the latest innovations but quickly recruited the cardiac specialists needed to implement them. Dr. McMillan retired in 1990, and in 2003, Virtua's newly renovated cardiac-care department was named in his honor.

In addition to his wife, Dr. McMillan is survived by son Thomas J., daughters Katherine and Linda, six grandchildren, and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Faith United Presbyterian Church, 318 Stokes Rd., Medford.

Memorial donations may be made to the Virtua Health Foundation, Virtua-Memorial Hospital, 895 Rancocas Rd., Suite 6, Mount Holly, N.J. 08060.
