Notes for John J. LYONS
John J. Lyons, "Jack", 88 of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully in his sleep while vacationing in Maine with his daughter.
He was born September 27, 1927 in Downingtown PA, son of the late Gerald J. and Josephine (Moulder) Lyons. After graduating high school, Jack served in the US Army with the occupation forces in Japan after WWII. Upon his discharge, he went on to the State Teacher College at West Chester and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Health Education. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1953 with a Certificate in Physical Therapy.
Jack went on to enjoy a career working at the Wilmington General Hospital and after a few years opened a private practice physical therapy office. He was also a high school football official for 50 years.
He enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, senior citizen softball, playing canasta and bridge with friends and traveling with his wife and members of the local AARP chapter. He made many friends at post cana activities and working as the exercise instructor for senior citizens aquatics at the JCC and the fitness center in the YMCA. Above all else, he cherished spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events and school activities.
Jack is survived by his children, Daniel (Joanne), Sharon, Dennis (Derrick), and Thomas (Christa); his grandchildren, Kristi Childress (David), Carolyn Hilbert (Randy), John and William Lyons; his great-granddaughter, Cassidy; his sister, Marjorie Kipp, and good friend, Priscilla.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen in 2011; and his brother, Gerald Lyons.
The Lyons family would love to take this opportunity to thank our Dad's neighbors for keeping an eye out, clearing his driveway and paths of snow, cutting the grass, and providing welcomed bake goods and sweets.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 1, 2016 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment services will be held privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Jack's family suggests making contributions in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association , 240 N. James Street, Newport, DE 19804 or to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at the address listed above.
