Notes for Jesse L. THOMAS
Jesse L. Thomas of Cochranville Jesse L. Thomas, 89, died on Monday, June 6, 2016, a day before his 90th birthday, at the Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Dunnett Thomas who died in 2002. They shared 59 years of marriage. Born in Homeville, he was the son of the late Chester and Sara Shivery Thomas. Jesse was an area resident all his life and a 1943 graduate of the former Cochranville High School. The following year he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served with the 6th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. Jesse proudly helped raise the American Flag on the island of Okinawa during intense combat. After the war, he was employed for 30+ years by General Motors in Wilmington, DE. He was a member of the Cochranville United Methodist Church and more recently attended Wesley Church in Quarryville. He was also a member of the Parkesburg VFW Post 4480. He enjoyed softball, bowling, gardening, hunting and most of all, spending time with his family on trips to the mountains. He is survived by four children; Gerald Thomas and wife Anne of Gap, Ronald Thomas and wife Donna of Oxford, Diane, wife of Chuck Harris of Cochranville and Carolyn Smith of Parkesburg, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three children; Jesse Thomas, Jr., Barry A. Thomas, and Elaine Lewis and seven siblings; William, Chester and Walter Thomas, Margaret Probst, Sarah Varner, Myrtle Groff and Dorothy Fleck. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 11am from the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St. Parkesburg, PA followed by interment at the Cochranville Methodist Cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to attend the viewing on Tuesday evening, June 14 from 6 - 8pm and also Wednesday morning from 10 to 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jesse’s honor to the Parkesburg VFW, 406 4th Ave. Parkesburg, PA 19365 or the 6th Marine Div. Assoc., 704 Cooper Court, Arlington, TX 76011.
