Notes for John Enos Jr. WOOD
HAMPTON - John Enos Wood Jr., 75, died Thursday, March 22, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
A native of Upper Darby, Pa., Mr. Wood lived on the Peninsula 25 years. He retired as a colonel from the Army in 1969, after 31 years of service. In 1938, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and entered active duty at Fort Monroe. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and he had subsequent assignments in Europe and the Middle East and several assignments at Fort Monroe. He was awarded the Legion of Merit medal and retired at Fort Monroe.
Mr. Wood graduated from Georgia Tech in 1938 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He attended Fort Monroe Chapel of the Centurion.
Survivors include his wife, Frances L. Wood; two daughters, Anne Dahling Frazier and Joan F. Wolf, both of The Dalles, Ore.; a sister, Louise C. Hall, of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral home. A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the chapel by Chaplain Col. Richard H. Holley. Burial with full military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Lung Association, 732 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News; or the Buckroe Beach Rescue Squad.
