Notes for James Augustus Jr. CADWALLADER
J. Augustus 'Gus' Cadwallader of Wayzata, Minn. passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015. He was 93.
He was born at home on June 1, 1921 in Yardley, Pa. to J. Augustus Cadwallader Sr. and Laura Parry Cadwallader. In high school, he attended George School in Newtown, Pa. and Loomis School in Windsor, Conn.
In college, he attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and Penn State University. He was a member and an active alumni member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He joined the Navy during WWII to become a pilot and did his pre-flight training at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where he met his wife, Betty Lou, and flight training at the University of NC, Chapel Hill, NC. While in the Navy he played football under the coaching of Bear Bryant.
Survived by wife, Helen Cadwallader, and his children; Belle Davenport (David), J. Augustus (Jake) Cadwallader, III (Cindy), Laura Lagenaur and Becky Pierson (Chris). Eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; brother, T. Sydney Cadwallader (Carol) and sister Laura Clappison.
Preceded in death by wife, Betty Lou Cadwallader; son, Jay Cadwallader; parents, Augustus and Laura Cadwallader; sister, Elizabeth Baldwin (Conrad); brother, William Cadwallader (Marion); brother-in-law, Charles Clappison and; son-in-law, Roy Lagenaur.
Gus worked 20 years for the Ralston Purina Company as the Minnesota District Sales Manager; and over 30 years in real estate as Manager/Broker for Fredrick Herfurth Real Estate and Realtor for Edina Realty – both in the Wayzata offices. He was a Past President and dedicated Wayzata Rotarian and a multiple recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award.
Gus never wanted gifts and when asked he would say, “I want Peace, Love and Happiness – and the Health to enjoy them all.” These words are how he lived his life and will always be his legacy to his family. Once you met Gus, you would never forget him. He will be in our hearts, “Always…”
