Notes for Jean Robertson BROWN

Jean Brown Wood passed away on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at her home at Pennswood Village, Newtown, Pa. She was 94.

She was born Jean Robertson Brown on May 5, 1916 in the town of Sewickley, near Pittsburgh, to her parents, Clarence Clapp Brown and Mabel Robertson Brown.

Growing up in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Jean and her family were active in the Unitarian Church.

She graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1934 and received her B.A. degree in History from Vassar College in 1938.

She married John Henry Wood Jr. of Langhorne in August 1942.

As a young woman, Jean worked at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Fleisher Art Memorial. In later years, she was the librarian at Newtown Friends School.

She was a longtime member of Middletown Meeting of Friends (Quaker) in Langhorne and also was active in the League of Women Voters and the YWCA. She loved to sing and to read. Many summers, Jean and her family went to Long Beach Island, N.J. and in later years she and her husband, John spent part of their winters in Highland Park, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of more than 68 years; her four children, John (Elyse), Roger (Valerie), Elizabeth (Ted), and Susan (Grant); her seven grandchildren: Chris, Sarah, Ben, Tim, Lindsay, Tucker, and Mariella; and her great-grandson, Aidan.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Pennswood Village.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jean's name may be given to Germantown Friends School, or to Newtown Friends School.
