YORK HARBOR, Maine - Robert Griffith Page of York Harbor, Maine, and Vero Beach, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, in York Hospital, Maine. Bob was born on March 25, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Edward C. and Elizabeth G. Page. He was a doctor, a teacher, a marvelous raconteur and had a wonderful baritone voice but above all else, he loved his family and any time he could share with them. He leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Pricilla Toland Drinker Page; son Robert Griffith Page Jr. and his wife Grace Fiormonti Page of Columbia, Maryland; daughter Elizabeth Page Waltz of Landgrove, Vermont; daughter Mary Page Stewart and her husband Robert McEntire Stewart of Baltimore, Maryland; brother Edward C. Page Jr. and sister-in-law Barbara Page of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; stepdaughter Sue Drinker and her husband Dick Durrance of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; stepson Nicholas Drinker and his wife Susan of Exeter, New Hampshire; stepdaughter Amy Drinker and her husband Larry Rosenfeld of Marblehead, Massachusetts; 11 grandchildren, Katherine Waltz Harris, Eleanor Griffith Stewart, George McEntire Page Stewart, Griffith Ross Page, James Robert Page, Charles Edward Page, Ashley Trubiano, Amanda Kasper, Jay Drinker, Max Rosenfeld, and William Rosenfeld; five great-grandchildren, Charlotte Griffith Harris, Georgia Livingston Harris, Mira Drinker, Preston Trubiano and Jack Kasper. His beloved wife and mother of his children, Mary Elizabeth Kent Page, and sister, Mary Elizabeth Page Sears, predeceased him.
Dr. Page practiced medicine in Londonderry, Vermont, both as a private physician and with the Mountain Valley Health Center. He was a lecturer at Yale University and adjunct professor at Dartmouth Medical School. Prior to that, he held many positions at the Medical College of Ohio including dean, provost, dean of faculty and professor of medicine and pharmacology. He was an associate dean at the University of Chicago. Dr. Page was also a professor of pharmacology at the University of Rangoon in Rangoon, Burma, as part of the Marshall Plan from 1951 to 1953. He served his country as a lieutenant j.g. in the Navy and was a senior surgeon for the United States Public Health Service. Dr. Page was a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, class of 1945; Princeton University, class of 1943; St. Paul's School, class of 1939. He was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the Medical College of Ohio and was honored to be a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The American College of Physicians, The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Page loved the time he spent as part of The Orpheus Club singing group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Mingaladoon Golf Club in Rangoon, Burma; The Century Club in New York City; The Dorset Field Club in Dorset, Vermont; and The Moorings in Vero Beach, Florida. After retirement from active medical practice, his passion other than his family became the game of golf. He was proud of his election to the Board of the Chicago Zoological Society and also of his appointment to the Environmental Board in Vermont by then-Governor Howard Dean.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 17, at the York Golf & Tennis Club in York, Maine. There are no calling hours. Bob's soul will rest with loved ones who have preceded him and with those left behind. His legacy is a love of family that will be honored for generations to come.
