Notes for Jane Clayton RILE
Jane Clayton (Rile) Roberts, 93, of Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth ME, passed away on February 29, 2016, with family at her side. Born on May 16, 1922 at the Memorial Hospital in Wilmington DE to her parents Vera Clayton Duff and J. Harmer Rile, Jr., she weighed just one pound at birth. She graduated from Tower Hill School in Wilmington in 1939 and from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg VA in 1943. An accomplished violinist, she played in the Wilmington Symphony (later the Delaware Symphony Orchestra) for 29 years as a volunteer, as well as with the Delaware County (PA) Symphony, the Arden Singers, and various other local and regional chamber music groups. She served the Wilmington Symphony as assistant librarian, as membership chairman, and as treasurer of the Women's Committee. As a long-time member of the Brandywiners theatrical troupe, she had met her husband of 54 years- John B. Roberts, a research chemical engineer with DuPont- during the 1944 production of "The Vagabond King" musical. For many years, Jane and John resided in the Wawaset Park neighborhood of Wilmington, where she was a member of the Academy of Lifelong Learning, the American Association of University Women, the Junior Board of Memorial Hospital (later Christiana Care), Immanuel Episcopal Church, and the Greenville Country Club. With a shared passion for traveling, they made many trips across North America and Europe with their young family, as well as many later trips throughout the world during retirement. Her other interests included art history, and living with antiques. In 1993, they moved into the Cokesbury Village retirement community in Hockessin DE, where John passed away in 2000. In early 2015, she left Delaware and moved to Maine to be closer to family.
Jane is survived by her two sons, Bruce B. Roberts (and his wife Susan F. Feiner) of Yarmouth ME, and Douglas C. Roberts (and his wife Wanda Roberts) of Amherst MA. Her other family members include her three granddaughters, Lisa E. Roberts of Glen Ridge NJ, Dana R. Roberts of Brooklyn NY, and Laurie B. Roberts of Washington DC, as well as three step-grandchildren, Evan A. Bradley of Hamilton MA, Eliza J. Bradley of Northampton MA, and Rowan C. de la Barre of Amherst MA.
A calling hour will be held at the Goodwin Funeral Home, at 607 Chestnut St in Manchester NH 03104, on Friday March 11th, 2016, at 12:00 noon, with interment next to John to follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery, at 765 Brown Avenue in Manchester. A subsequent gathering in her memory, for family and friends to celebrate her remarkable life, will be held in the Yarmouth ME area, sometime during May 2016. In lieu of flowers, she had requested that donations instead be made to the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, or the Winterthur Museum.
