Notes for Kathryn E. SMEDLEY
Kathryn E. “Bette” Charles, 75, of Downington, passed away on Friday, February 26, 2016, at Pembrooke Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. and Margaret Clark Smedley. She was a 1958 honor graduate of Downingtown High School and a 1961 graduate of Delaware Hospital School of Nursing, where she received the Medical Nursing award. She also attended West Chester University. During her career, Bette was employed by Chester County Hospital, Immaculata College, and Embreeville Center. In 2005, she retired from West Chester University Student Health Center after 17 years of service. Bette was certified in College Health Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. After her retirement, she volunteered at Downingtown West Middle School, Downingtown Education Center, and Bishop Shanahan High School. She was also employed part-time by Maxim Health Systems. In her early years, Bette was active in the Home and School Association and served as a Girl Scouts troop leader. She was a former member of the Junior Women’s Club and First Baptist Church of Downingtown, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, and served on the Board of Christian Education. Bette was also a former member of Windsor Baptist Church and DelChester Chapter of PARSE (Pennsylvania Association for Retired State Employees). She was active with, and a life member of, Downingtown High School Alumni Association and an active member of the Downingtown Class of 1958 high school reunion committee, holding a class reunion Christmas party at her home for many years. For leisure, Bette enjoyed flower gardening, music, movies, and ice cream. She kept in touch with long-time friends, especially her “gang” from Downingtown. Bette was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. She was a loving and caring person to her family and enjoyed spending time with and going to the beach with them. Bette is survived by her children, Kathy S. (Darrell) Walter, of Lititz, Wendy J. (Joe) Erhardt, of Sellersville, Amy E. Linebarger, of Lititz, and Chip Charles, of Downingtown; sisters, Georgia (Herman) Wolff, of Wharton, TX, and Jo Smedley, of Galveston, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bekka, Jenna, Guy, Lacey, Nathan, and Kenzie. A memorial service for Bette will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 East Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown, where family and friends may call from 5:00 to 6:45 p.m. Interment will be private. Bette had requested that everyone attending her memorial service wear bright clothing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bette’s memory to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society , 100 North 20th Street, Suite 405, Philadelphia, PA 19103,
