Notes for Alan Jr. CRAWFORD
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, for Alan Crawford Jr., 88, an investment adviser, conservationist, and civic leader, who died Saturday, Aug. 23, at his home, Little Brook Farm in Devon.
The cause of death was respiratory failure.
Before retiring in 1986, Mr. Crawford was the managing partner of the Philadelphia office of Brown Brothers Harriman & Co., a private bank headquartered in New York City. He joined the firm in 1957 and was made partner in 1974. Prior to that, he worked at Stroud & Co., an investment company in Philadelphia.
He was a member of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.
An active civic leader, Mr. Crawford served on many corporate and nonprofit boards.
They included SKF Industries Inc.; Western Savings Bank; Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, American Red Cross; Pennsylvania Horticultural Society; Zoological Society of Philadelphia; Academy of Natural Sciences; United Way of Philadelphia; and the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades.
His interest in conservation was reflected in his work with the Pennsylvania chapter of the Nature Conservancy; Chesapeake Bay Foundation; RARE Center for Tropical Conservation; Wilson Ornithological Society; Cornell Lab of Ornithology; and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary.
He was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, in Wayne, where he served on the vestry.
Mr. Crawford was a member of the Philadelphia Club; Racquet Club of Philadelphia; Fourth Street Club; Union League of Philadelphia; Mill Dam Club in Wayne; and the Philadelphia Anglers Club.
A skilled fly-fisherman and ornithologist, he traveled all over the world fishing and bird-watching. He actively supported land and wildlife conservation, locally, regionally, and nationally.
Mr. Crawford attended Episcopal Academy but graduated from St. Mark's School, in Southborough, Mass., in 1944. He attended Princeton University. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1945 and in the Air Force from 1950 to 1951.
"He was generous and thoughtful in word and deed," said son Alan Crawford III. "He was definitely a family man."
Besides his son, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Townsend; daughters Elizabeth Hucker, Barbara "Bebe" Feimster, and Susan Stevens; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Mr. Crawford's memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Chapel at St. David's Episcopal Church, 763 S. Valley Forge Road, Wayne. Burial was private.
