Notes for Barbara TOWNSEND

Barbara Townsend Crawford of Devon Barbara Townsend (“Bar”) Crawford, 84, died peacefully on January 17, 2016, surrounded by her children. Born to Charles Cooper Townsend and Ethel Heckscher Townsend, she grew up in Bryn Mawr, Media and Haverford, Pennsylvania. Bar attended The Shipley School from grades 2 through 8, and she graduated from Chatham Hall (Chatham, Virginia) in 1948 and from Bryn Mawr College in 1952. While at Bryn Mawr, she was awarded the coveted White Blazer for achievement in Athletics. Bar married Alan Crawford, Jr. in 1953, and they raised their four children on the family’s farm in Devon. Bar and Alan were married for 61 years, until Alan’s death in August 2014. Bar was a dedicated alumna of Shipley, where all three of her daughters were “lifers”. She served on Shipley’s Board of Trustees for 19 years and was elected Trustee Emerita when she stepped down in 1988. In 2000, she received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service. Bar joined Alan in a love of all things natural, especially birds, and they traveled far and wide to add to their life lists. She was also an avid gardener, tennis player and fly-fisher. Bar and Alan were members of The Pohoqualine Fish Association, The Triton Fish & Game Club, The Hillsboro Club, The Gasparilla Inn, and The Mill Dam Club, and were house members of Gulph Mills Golf Club. Bar is survived by her four children: Alan III (Robin), Elizabeth Hucker (David), Barbara (“Bebe”) Feimster, Susan Stevens (Benjamin); nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband and by her brother, Charles C. Townsend, Jr. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, at 11 AM in the Chapel at St. David’s Church, 763 S. Valley Rd., Wayne, PA 19087. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to The Shipley School, 814 Yarrow St., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, or to Chatham Hall, 800 Chatham Hall Circle, Chatham, VA 24531.
