Notes for Joseph H. WAY
Joseph H. Way, 92 yrs, of Elverson, died on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at the Zerbe Sisters Nursing Home in Narvon, following an illness.
He was born in Stormstown, Centre Co., Pa. on May 29, 1923. Joseph was the son of the late Darlington and Ina (Whitely) Way. He was the husband of Eleanor M. (Heller) Way, with whom he shared 63 years of marriag
Joseph grew up on a Centre County fruit and dairy farm. He was an active member of 4-H clubs, the Grange and the State College Friends Meeting (Quaker). He graduated from Penn State University in 1951 and was employed by Penn State as an agricultural agent in Chester County until 1963 when he was transferred to Montgomery County, retiring in 1986 with 35 years of service. During those years with the cooperation of Penn State specialists he developed educational programs for agricultural and horticulture producers of farm crops, dairy, other livestock, fruits, vegetables, golf course superintendents, arboriculture, landscape maintain, and related occupations. He also worked with Penn State sponsored 4-H program for youth 8-18 and was instrumental in developing the Montgomery County 4-H Center at Creamery.
He was a member of the Norristown Friends Meeting, a member and past president of Norristown Kiwanis Club. He was awarded the distinguish service award by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents and the Eb Steininger Award, the highest award given by the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents.
Upon retirement he planted and operated a “Retirement Orchard” in Upper Providence Township of 900 dwarf apple trees, 400 Peach and 60 sweet cherries. He operated the orchard for 21 years and sold fruit locally off a self-service stand. He also enjoyed traveling.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Morris and Robert Way.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carol L. (Robert) Bullock of Carlisle, three brothers, Dr. Roger, Elwood, and Ralph Way all of State College, a sister, Rebecca Drick of Montoursville. There are three grandsons, Jason, Eric, and Corey.
A Traditional Quaker Service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at 11 AM from The Labs Funeral Home, Inc., 141 Pequea Ave., Honey Brook, Pa. and Celebration of Life Service with a time of shared memories will follow at 11:15 AM. Receiving of friends will be held from 10:30 to 11AM at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at the Friends Cemetery in Centre Co., Pa.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions maybe made in the memory of Joseph to Montgomery Co. Farm, Home, & 4H Center, 1015 Bridge Road, Collegeville, PA 19426.
