Notes for George Dillwyn PARRISH

George Dillwyn Parrish of Fort Collins, CO George Dillwyn Parrish passed away Christmas morning 2015 in Fort Collins, CO, one month shy of his 89th birthday. Born January 24, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, Parrish was the second eldest of five boys, Anthony, George, Cuthbert, William and Richard.. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy and graduated from Springfield High School in 1944. He graduated from Dickinson College and Law School in 1951, and was a practicing attorney for over 30 years. On May 4, 1957, he married Janice Sibre, whom he met in the Whitemarsh Valley Players theatre troupe. Their nearly 59-year marriage was an inspiration of love, mutual respect, kindness, and commitment. He adored and cherished his wife and family every day during the life they built together. George made his career as a wills and estates lawyer. He was a caring and understanding person, and practiced law as a way of helping people. For decades, he worked with the law firm of Philips, Curtin & DiGiacomo in Philadelphia, PA. A strong sense of morality, ethics, and justice carried George through his professional and personal life. Following his lifelong interest in politics, George became a Springfield Township/Montgomery County Commissioner in 1980, serving until 1985. He also served as the secretary for the Springfield Township Historical Society. He was the first Democrat to be elected to commissioner in Springfield Township in many years. George loved reading (especially books about the history of U.S. democracy and its champions like Franklin Delano Roosevelt). He had a rare curiosity of mind – with a lifelong interest in politics, law, history, and the stories of people he met and spoke with his whole life. He also loved to read, compose, and often quote poetry. He grew up going “down the shore” in Avalon, NJ. Being near the ocean was his favorite place in the world. As his children grew up, they spent every summer down the shore as well. He loved to fish and shared this passion with his children. George was a kind and patient man, with a great sense of humor. On Christmas morning, he would leave two sets of stockings for his children – one on their bed full of games and puzzles to keep them occupied until “Santa and Mrs. Claus” woke up at a reasonable hour, brewed their coffee, and were ready to open presents. A lover of games, George excelled at “the 3 P’s”: pinball, pool, and ping-pong. He loved to play rowdy games of cards with friends and family – from bridge, to poker, to hearts, to pig. His retirement at age 63 led to fifteen years of travel and adventure with his wife, Jan. They sailed the inland waterway on the East Coast, travelled the U.S. and Canada in their RV visiting family and seeing new places, eventually settling by their children in Fort Collins, CO for their final decade together. For years, George and Jan travelled to Oregon to visit their grandkids each summer, serving as campground hosts along the Rogue River. His retirement continued to include service -- he was an ad litum through the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) during years he and Jan spent living in Florida. He served on the board, and as president, of the owner’s association while he and Jan lived in their last home together in Fort Collins. They also worked with Healthcare for All Coloradoans, and were active in the Unitarian Universalist church. George also continued to help many clients for years after he “officially” retired, and liked to say: “attorneys never retire, they just fade away.” George leaves behind his wife of nearly 59 years, Janice Sibre Parrish of Fort Collins, CO, four children – George Dillwyn Jr. (and partner CeCe), of Fort Collins, CO; David, of Walton, OR; Sue, of Ashland, OR; and Sarah (and partner Kevin), of Fort Collins, CO; two grandchildren – Jade, of Durham, NC, and Kia, of Bellingham, WA; two brothers, Richard and William Parrish, and many other family and friends who will miss him deeply. He adored birds and as a lifelong birdwatcher, his family is requesting that in lieu of flowers or gifts, those who wish to remember George Parrish make a donation in his name to the Audubon Society (https://www.audubon.org/). Family and friends will be celebrating his life on January 23rd, 2016 in Fort Collins, CO.
