Son of Royal W. Karschner and Anna Bell Lewis Karschner.
Husband of Margaret E. Ort Karschner whom he married on August 25, 1930, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware.
John, who resided at 1301 Linden Street, Wilmington, Delaware served as a Fourth Cook on the S.S. Coamo, Merchant Marine during World War II.
He was "Lost At Sea" when the Coamo was torpedoed and sunk by German Submarine U-604 in the North Atlantic. He was awarded the Mariner's Medal.
He had served in the Merchant Marines for two months at the time of his death.

None of the 186 people aboard the Coamo, including those who managed to get into life rafts, survived. This was the largest number of lives lost on any American merchant ship during World War II.
