Notes for Cecilia Kent LEAVITT
Mother of artist Cecilia Beaux. She was a dark-haired teacher who was raised in New York City by her parents John Wheeler Leavitt and Cecilia Kent Leavitt. She met French immigrant Jean Adolphe Beaux and fell in love, marrying on April 3, 1850 in New York City. Their first daughter, Alice Zepherine, was born in February 1851 but died just eleven months later. Their two surviving children were Aimee Ernesta and Cecilia Beaux, later a famous artist. Her daughter also named Cecilia was born shortly after the family moved to Philadelphia, and Cecilia died there due to complications from the pregnancy. Her husband was broken over the death and returned to his family in France for most of the next sixteen years and their daughters were raised by her mother.
