Notes for John Barton LINVILL
John Barton Linvill of Bryn Mawr John Barton “Bart” Linvill (1915-2015) passed away on December 25, 2015, at Beaumont Retirement Community, having reached the century mark on March 21, 2015. A life-long resident of the Philadelphia area, Bart grew up in Wynnewood with his parents, Adaline Paxton and Walker Eachus Linvill. He graduated from The Episcopal Academy in 1933 and from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1937. Bart married his wife of 72 years, Sally Sumner Poole, of Canton, Massachusetts, on June 13, 1942. She predeceased him on April 27, 2014. Together, they had two children, Sally Sumner Linvill Bund (Ian) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and John Barton Linvill, Jr. (Susie) of Wayne, Pennsylvania. They had five grandsons: Stefan Lorenz Bund (Sarah), Barton Sumner Bund, John Barton Linvill, III, Benjamin Hunter Linvill and Joshua Walker Linvill (Chelsea). Additionally, they had five great-grandchildren: Eowyn Lisl Sutton Bund, Iris Analea Sutton Bund, Nicklaus Augustus Bund, Alexandra Elizabeth Bund, Victoria Lauren Bund, Chase Barton Linvill and Darrah Anne Linvill. Bart served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U. S. Navy Supply Corps from 1941-1945, and saw action in the South Pacific for two years. After World War II, he returned to Philadelphia and worked as a Certified Public Accountant for his entire career, with Wilson, Linvill and Parry, the Curtis Publishing Company and Girard Bank. He was a professional member and president of the Tax Executives Institute of Philadelphia. He was a dedicated community leader, serving on the boards of directors of a number of non-profit organizations, including The Friends Home for Children, Radnor Memorial Library and Martin’s Dam Club, the latter two during major expansion campaigns. He was also a member of The Sons of St. George, The Welcome Society, The Sons of the Revolution, The Union League of Philadelphia and its Hearth Club. He was the first president of the Foundation of the Sons of St. George. A graveside service will be held for family members at Washington Memorial Chapel Cemetery in Valley Forge. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in his memory to The Episcopal Academy, 1785 Bishop White Drive, Newtown Square, PA 19073. Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home Inc.
