Notes for Robert W. MACLARY

Robert W. Maclary, age 88, passed away at home on Friday, October 23, 2015.

He leaves his wife of 65 years, Margaret "Jean" Maclary; his daughter, Cheryl Woodward (Charles F. III); granddaughter, Melissa Davis; grandson, Charles F. Woodward IV (Jessica); sisters, Charlotte Powell and Edith Sanders (Harland); future great grandbaby Woodward; and many loving and caring nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in the Newport area, he was the son of the late, Robert P. and Edith (Carter) Maclary. In his early years, Bob would help in the family business, Maclary Sausage and Scrapple. On his 18th birthday, Bob and many of the graduating class of 1945 left Conrad High School to serve their country. Bob joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Fort Marion. After his honorable discharge he returned to Conrad to finish his senior year. Bob met his wife, Jean in 1947 and in 1950 were married in Elsmere, DE. They have enjoyed 65 years of marriage.

Bob's father owned the Pleasant Hill Drive-In Theater where Bob worked for many years while briefly working for the DuPont Company and then the General Motors plant on Boxwood Road. In 1962, Bob and his father opened the Pleasant Hill Bowling Lanes bowling center where he eventually retired from in 1992.

During his wonderful life, Bob was active in many endeavors including thoroughbred horse racing, hunting, boating and fishing. He enjoyed growing his own vegetables, cooking and preserving the crops to enjoy and share with family and friends. Bob and Jean were fortunate enough to have enjoyed living in Lewes, DE and Jupiter, FL.

Bob believed in helping others and chose to become involved in the Masonic Order. His fellowship in the organization included Armstrong Lodge #26 AF and AM where he was a Mastor Mason of the 32nd degree, charter member of Nur Temple, Shrine Club of DE; St. John's Commandery No.1; the Bedford Club; past director of the Royal Order of Jester's Court #164; Acacia Lodge #163 (Stuart, FL); Amara Shriners (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and the Treasure Coast Billiken Club of Florida. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifelong member of the VFW. Bob was inducted into the Wilmington Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1998 and was a lifetime member of Minquas Fire Company.

Bob's family and friends will miss his humor, wisdom, candor and forever smiling face. He was admired by family and friends and had a unique spirit that showed tremendous strength, courage, generosity and love. He will also be missed by the foxes that he fed every night in his backyard.

Family and Friends are invited to visit on Friday, October 30th, 2015 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek from 10:00am - 12:00pm. A Masonic Service will be held at 12:00pm with a Funeral Service to follow. Interment will take place in Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
