Notes for John Howell JANEWAY

United States Army Officer. After graduating from medical school he joined the Army in 1861. After serving through the Civil War, he was assigned to various posts on the western frontier, and gained a reputation through his studies of prehistoric fossils he found near the posts. He rose to the rank of Colonel, and served as Deputy Surgeon of the United States Army. He was the nephew of Civil War Union General Joshua Blackwood Howell.
