BERNICE ADAMS PHILLIPS
July 16, 1900 - Aug. 29, 1976
Bernice Marie Phillips, daughter of Lincoln and Betty Pickering Adams, was born July 16, 1900, at Florence Station, Illinois of New England Quaker heritage. The family came by way of Illinois and Wisconsin to Iowa in 1870 where they experienced all the hardships of pioneer life on the prairie.
Her parents lived for a brief time in Illinois and during this time Bernice was born. She came with her parents to Sutherland when she was two years old. Here she grew to young womanhood and graduated from the Sutherland High School in 1919. She attended the University of Iowa at Iowa City, Drake University at Des Moines, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Missouri State University at Springfield. She taught for 27 years in Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma and Mexico. She was united in marriage to
Forrest Phillips at Sayre, Okla. on May 28, 1931.
She lived a full and interesting life. Although her vocation was teaching, she experienced a variety of work in other field, working for a telephone exchange, as a PBX operator, in a war plant, and in a hotel and coffee shop. While teaching in Mexico she had unique and interesting experiences. She had a deep interest in young people wherever she met them.
In 1957 her husband passed away and in 1959 Bernice returned to Sutherland and taught in the Sioux Valley School at Peterson until her retirement. She accepted a part-time position as librarian in the Gen. N.B. Baker Library until failing health forced her into complete retirement. For the past few years she has been a resident in Millie's Rest Home in Sutherlan and it was here that she passed away on August 29, 1976, at the age of 76.
She was a woman of great vitality with a great interest in
all, things. Throughout her lifetime she kept in touch with
her former pupils and with the many friends acquired during
her lifetime.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother, whose death was recent, May, 1976.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Earlene Adams of Akron, Iowa, and Mrs. Pearl Phillips of Algona, Iowa; one nephew, Michael Adams of Parawan, Utah; two nieces, Mrs. Cal (Alyce) Siler of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Mrs. Bruce (Harlene) Mclnnis of Hawarden, Iowa; other relatives
and friends.
