Notes for Nelson Payne Jr. HOBDELL

Nelson P. Hobdell Jr., 75, a resident of Springfield for the last 47 years, died July 27 at Crozer-Chester Hospital Springfield Division.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Hobdell lived in Springfield for the last 47 years. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in 1943, Mr. Hobdell was employed as a physicist at the Frankford Arsenal prior to serving in the Army during World War II.

Later, he worked as a chemical engineer in the Marshall Laboratory of the E.I. duPont Co., Philadelphia for 47 years before his retirement in 1984.

Earlier in his life, he played the tuba and french horn in the Upper Darby High School Band and was a member of the Fair Society of the University of Pennsylvania.

He belonged to the 25-year Club at E.I. DuPont and was an active member of Covenant United Methodist Church, where he served with the decorating committee, the Wednesday Willing Workers and as an usher. He also was a former chairman of the church's Cub Pack. In addition, Mr. Hobdell was an active football fan of the University of Pennsylvania team, took part in the Civil Defense Corp. and enjoyed classical and marching music. He was a past president of both the Sabold School Home and School Association and the Civil Chester Downs and belonged to the AARP.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Eleanor Haigh Hobdell; three sons, Nelson P. Hobdell 3rd of Glen Mills, John Hobdell of Sellersville and Robert Hobdell of Springfield and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Covenant United Methodist Church, Springfield, where there is a calling hour from 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill.
