SPEAKMAN Catherine Ellen Jane McKee Speakman On June 12, 2015. Precious daughter of John Alexander and Martha Frances Shannon McKee, and younger sister of Robert James. Beloved wife of Lewis Frederick Speakman, all of whom predeceased her. Cherished mother of Linda Baughman (of Bealeton VA) and Janine Speakman (of Olney, MD). Additional survivors include son-in-law Allen Baughman (of Bealeton, VA), grandchildren David Baughman (of Bealeton, VA), Alex and Renae Littleford (of Beaver Falls, PA), Brendan Littleford (of Olney, MD) and Laura and Ryan Wolfe (of Rockville, MD); three great grandsons; and five nieces and their extended families. "Caye" was born on August 27, 1917 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Taylor-Alderdice High School in 1934. Caye attended Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon University) to study music. She supported herself while a student by working as a sales clerk at a five and dime; a receptionist for a lumber company; and payroll, time, and materials clerk for a defense plant during WWII. She eventually trained as a beautician and moved to Berwyn, PA to work in her aunt's shop for 12 years. During this time, she participating in Business and Professional Women's Club, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as a church organist, soloist and choir director. On November 14, 1958, she and Lewis Frederick Speakman eloped. During her marriage, she developed a passion for handicrafts and textile arts, returning to college at University of Maryland to earn a bachelor's degree in Handicrafts in 1978. She taught spinning, weaving and natural dyeing for many years. An avid doll collector and traveler, she also enjoyed researching genealogy. She was a long-time member of Colesville Presbyterian Church in Silver Spring, MD, where she was very active in the women's group and choir. In later years, she was a member of Interfaith Chapel in Leisure World. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Colesville Presbyterian Church, 12800 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, 20904 (phone 301-622-4555/6). A reception, with light luncheon, will be held in the church's Fellowship Hall, immediately following the service. Interment of the ashes will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, later in the day.
