Notes for Carolyn Baker ALLMOND

Carolyn Baker Allmond Gorry, 97, died July. 31, 2015. She was a native of Wilmington, DE, but had made her home in Virginia Beach since 1976. She was the daughter of William Stewart Allmond II and Ruth Baker Allmond long time Wilmington residents. Carolyn married James A Gorry, Jr., of Wilmington on March 19, 1938. Through Jim's work with the DuPont Company they spent the years of World War II in Hatch, New Mexico, and Berkeley, California, returning to Wilmington for the rest of his career. As soon as their youngest child was in college they started to travel the world never missing an opportunity for a new experience. They eased into retirement by living in Inch, Ireland, (Dingle Peninsula) for seven months while their new home in Sand bridge was being built. There they made new friends and entertained many old Wilmington friends. They were among the first volunteers at The Old Coast Guard Museum at the corner of 24th Street and Atlantic Avenue. In 1986 they moved to a condominium in the heart of the Oceanfront. After Jim's death in 1990 Carolyn continued her many activities with family and friends including her work with her Kings Daughters Circle. Carolyn was always a lady, a quiet mentor of life who led by example. She enjoyed intelligent conversation, a good pun and was genuinely interested in your point of view.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband, parents, sister, Marjorie Allmond Jones, her brother-in-law Willard David Jones, and her step-mother, Frances Haskell Allmond. She is survived by her three children, her son, James A Gorry III, and his wife, Anne Evans Gorry, her son, Stewart Allmond Gorry, and her daughter, Nancy Hunter Gorry and her husband, Richard Jeffers, all of Virginia Beach; her grandson, Scott Baker Gorry and his wife Kathryn Ferguson Gorry and their daughters Grace, Ashleigh and Meredith of Charlottesville; and, her granddaughter, Kathryn Gorry Braun and her husband Geoffery Lea Braun and their son Hunter Lea Braun of Virginia Beach. Also surviving Carolyn are her brother Joseph Allmond and his wife Joan Allmond of Palmyra, Virginia, four nieces Judith Jones Moore and Nancy Baker Jones both of Texas, Elaine Gorry Moore of Florida and Marsha Gorry Anderson of North Dakota, Allmond family cousins in Wilmington and a wonderful friend, Lisa Nicholson. The family thanks the staff at The Memory Center for their kind, gentle, loving care for the last three years and Interim Hospice for their care in her final days. H.D. Oliver, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling cremation.

A family memorial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in Carolyn's memory may be made to The Old Coast Guard Museum.
