Notes for N. Leroy KIRK
N. Leroy Kirk, 83, a lifelong resident of Broomall and a self-made businessman, died Tuesday, June 23, of complications from diabetes at Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
Known as "Le" to those close to him, Mr. Kirk was the son of Nelson L. and Katharine Lewis Kirk. A gentle man with a sense of humor, he was a birthright Quaker who lived a life "of peace and principle," his family said in a remembrance.
After graduating from George School in 1950, Mr. Kirk studied engineering at Drexel University's night school. He worked hard to establish his business, K-E Industries Inc., in 1963 and build it into a successful enterprise in Chester, Delaware County.
Mr. Kirk ran the firm, manufacturing industrial trash compactors and chutes, until 1993, when health problems intervened. He was an insulin-dependent diabetic for 65 years.
"Le never complained, accepting a strict daily regimen to manage his diabetes," his family said in a tribute.
Mr. Kirk met Sarah Weaver while the two attended George School. They married and had two children.
Mr. Kirk loved vegetable gardening, crabbing, surf fishing, camping, building, renovating, and tinkering. He derived great enjoyment from making the floats for the local Fourth of July parade. But most of all, he doted on his family and friends.
Besides his wife of 62 years, he is survived by daughter Nancy Kirk Kane; son Bruce G.; four grandchildren; two sisters; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is to be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at Willistown Friends Meeting, 7069 Goshen Rd., Newtown Square. Burial will follow the service.
Donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 225 City Ave., Suite 104, Bala Cynwyd, Pa. 19004.
