Notes for Richard Evan HANNUM

Richard Evan Hannum, formerly of Malvern Richard Evan Hannum, of the Shannondell Retirement Community, Audubon, Montgomery County, died at The Meadows at Shannondell on Thursday, June 4, 2015. He was 87. Mr. Hannum, formerly of Half Hill Farm, Charlestown Township, Malvern, Pa., was born in Philadelphia, Pa. (a 7th generation Philadelphian), to the late William Byron Hannum and Maria (McGlone) Hannum. He was a 1951 mechanical engineering graduate of Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University), and worked for ARCO until his retirement in 1983. He also attained the rank of Captain in the Reserve Commissioned Officers of the U.S. Army before his honorable discharge in 1964, after serving twelve years. He was an accomplished soloist tenor, performing in a multitude of venues over six decades. He was a founding member of the national honorary musical fraternity Beta chapter, Pi Nu Epsilon, at Drexel, in 1947, and an alumni of Drexel’s Alpha Pi Lamda Fraternity. He was also a talented ballroom dancer, an avid board game and cards enthusiast, and a formidable contract bridge player, often being asked to serve as a tournament director. He was a member of St. Peter’s Pikeland United Church of Christ in Chester Springs. Mr. Hannum is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edna (Berry) Hannum, and their three children, Charles, husband of Jeanne (Fisher) Hannum, of Philadelphia, Rebecca, wife of Edgar R. Buckley, of Nottingham, and Judith Rice, of Landenberg, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his six brothers, and it is a certainty that they are all now playing one heck of a card game up in heaven. At his request, there will be no memorial service. Any memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Pikeland UCC of Chester Springs, Pa.
