Notes for Dorothy DARLINGTON
Dorothy Mastriena, 105, passed away on May 10, 2015 at Wellington Terrace with loving family by her side. She was born on March 19, 1910 in Birmingham Township, Chester County, PA. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Fontaine Harvey and Bessie Bennett Darlington. She was predeceased by her loving husband Joseph G. Mastriena, her brother Charles S. Darlington Sr, her sister Sara Ogle, step son Joseph G Mastriena Jr and nephew Charles S. Darlington Jr. When asked what time of day she was born, “Dot” (as most people knew her) always answered “milking time” because her father was out in the barn with the cows when she was born.
Dot graduated from the original West Chester High School in 1928. She was a faithful attendee at reunions of the high school until well into her 100’s. Dorothy graduated from Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in 1931 and served as secretary/treasurer of the alumni association for many years. She also attended the alumni dinners into her 100’s. After nursing school she worked as a private duty nurse until meeting and marrying her husband.
Joseph and Dorothy lived in Havertown their entire married life. After Joe’s passing, Dorothy continued to live in their home until age 103 when she moved to Wellington.
Survivors of Dorothy include a step daughter Dorothy O’Sullivan of Richboro, PA, her step daughter in law Peggy Mastriena, niece Dorothy Ogle, nephews Chet Darlington Sr, Leslie Darlington, Terrence Darlington and Kevin Darlington as well as numerous great nieces, great nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by step grandchildren and step great grandchildren on the Mastriena side. Additionally, she is survived by a first cousin Iva Siever.
No one can speak about Dorothy without talking about her passionate love of animals, especially dogs and a few cats thrown in there. She will have a kennel full waiting for her and especially her last dog KiKi who she talked about all the time. KiKi went to “doggie heaven” in 2014.
Some words to describe Dorothy would be kind hearted, hardworking, feisty, strong willed, reliable and always the first to help everyone as evidenced by her long term nursing care of her mother, husband and brother. She was truly an “angel of nursing” in the truest sense of the words.
It is impossible to really describe a woman who lived to 105 years. She loved life and lived every minute to serve all who needed her. While her passing will be mourned her life is one to be celebrated.
Her life celebration be will on Friday May 15, 2015 at 10am at Mauger-Givnish Funeral Home 24 Monument Avenue Malvern, PA followed by interment at Birmingham –Lafayette Cemetery which is just down the road from where she was born.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to any animal rescue organization. The family would like to thank the staff at Wellington Court and Terrance. She was happy being there and received wonderful care and love.
If Dorothy was reading all this she would say “Oh mercy”.
