Notes for Peter SINKLER
Peter Sinkler of Downingtown Peter “Peg Leg” Sinkler, 73, of Downingtown, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Dunwoody Village in Newtown Square. He was the companion of Mary Duffey of Downingtown for the past 43 years. Born in Abington, he was the son of the late Wharton Sinkler, Jr. and Harriet Corning Sinkler. As a child, Pete attended summer camps in Maine, and in later years continued vacationing there. He attended The Phelps School in Malvern, and while there developed a skill for tennis and a love for soccer. Pete’s plan was to become a professional soccer player; but at the age of 19, he was badly injured in an auto accident which caused the loss of his leg. With a competitive spirit and drive, he fought through that difficult time in his life, never letting it slow him down. In 1968, he started riding motorcycles to prove that even when one loses a limb, you can still do things as well as others who haven’t. He continued riding for 42 years. He also enjoyed drag racing and customizing cars. He enjoyed playing pool at Cue Corner in Downingtown, spending so much time there that the owner hired him. Together they attended tournaments and in 1980 started a relationship with PPPA (Professional Pool Players Association). With the owner’s help, Pete managed to organize and finance the first ever Junior World Open 14.1 Tournament in New York, and established the National Junior 9-Ball Championship which was held at the Cue Corner for ten years. In 1986, Pete bought the business, and the Pete Sinkler Straight Pool Championship was introduced for players under 17 years of age, which was a highly sought after tournament title for many of the best players in the east, lasting twenty years. Through the years, he helped many junior players progress to the professional level. He also enjoyed photography and playing golf; and was a member of the Harley Owners Group. In addition to his companion, Mary, Pete is survived by his sons, Andrew L. (Sandra) of Sykesville, MD, and Peter A. (Kerri) of Coatesville. He is also survived by his brother, Wharton Sinkler, III of Minnesota, and half-brother, Samuel E. Ewing, of West Virginia; and by grandchildren, Jaden Sinkler, Kaelyn and Joseph Atkinson, and Fallon Sinkler. He was predeceased by his brother, Edwin Sinkler and half-brother, Steve Ewing. A memorial celebration will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th, at the James J. Terry Funeral Home in Downingtown, where family and friends may call from 3 to 4 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peter Sinkler Burial Fund, c/o the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Ave., Downingtown, PA 19335.
