Shirley Robinson Brown was the daughter of Bessie S. Barr and Paul Lawrence Robinson. She was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Delaware County, PA. She married Arthur M. Brown and they had three children. Her maternal grandparents were John H. Barr and Deborah S. Boles, who lived in West Chester, PA. Her paternal grandparents were John N. Robinson and Amy C.
