Notes for Morris Jr. LLOYD
Morris "Mickey" Lloyd Jr., 77, of Philadelphia, an insurance executive who was active in alumni affairs for various educational institutions, died of a heart attack Monday, March 16, in Vero Beach, Fla.
His family said Mr. Lloyd collapsed as he was about to tee off for a round of golf with his wife and daughter. The family maintains a condominium in Florida.
Born in Philadelphia, he attended Chestnut Hill Academy but graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., in 1956.
He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he pledged Delta Psi and met Eleanor Price, whom he married.
The couple moved to Philadelphia. Mr. Lloyd went to work for Lukens, Savage & Washburn, an insurance brokerage; he was made partner in 1965. After a merger with Alexander & Alexander Inc., a large corporate entity was created. Mr. Lloyd became managing vice president of its Philadelphia office.
In 1980, he took a job with the Philadelphia Contributionship, where he was CEO until 1995. During that period, the contributionship bought a small Pittsburgh security firm that became Vector Security.
In 1995, Mr. Lloyd retired from the insurance industry to devote himself to development work on behalf of Trinity College.
Throughout his adult life, Mr. Lloyd thrived on such work for schools. In 1972, he headed the Chestnut Hill Academy search committee that recruited headmaster Gerrit Keator. He also led the board of trustees from 1972 to 1976 and was an honorary academy trustee.
He was a trustee for Trinity College from 1979 to 1988, was class agent for his 50th reunion, and was working on plans for his 55th class reunion at the time of his death.
At the 45th reunion, Mr. Lloyd was awarded the Eigenbrodt Cup, the "greatest honor the college can bestow upon an alumnus," his family said. The culmination of his work for the college was as development director of the Mid-Atlantic region. He helped to achieve a $100 million fund-raising program that paved the way for a new admissions and career development building on the campus, and other projects.
"He was a big, expansive, gregarious man with a love for Trinity," said Inquirer Editor William K. Marimow, a Trinity alumnus and former trustee. "Because of his passion for the school, he was very good at what he did. And he was A-plus company."
In addition to his work with schools, Mr. Lloyd served on the boards of Pennsylvania Hospital, the Philadelphia Fire Department Historical Corp., the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, and the Sunnybrook Golf Club. He was a former vestry member of St. Thomas' Church in Fort Washington.
Mr. Lloyd loved spending time with his family and sailing, which he learned as a boy. He kept a sailboat in Oxford, Md., where the Lloyds spent most weekends.
After the children had less time for sailing, he bought a day sailer, an Alerion Express 20, which he could navigate solo. "He just adored it," his wife said.
When he decided it was no longer safe to pilot the boat alone, he sold it and bought a condominium in Vero Beach "looking west across the Indian River Lagoon, where he could watch the boats and the sunsets," his family said.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a daughter, Lisa; sons Tony and Ted; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at St. Thomas' Church, 610 Church Rd., Fort Washington. Burial was private.
Donations may be made to the Class of 1960 Presidential Scholars Fund, Trinity College, 300 Summit St., Hartford, Conn. 06106.
