"John Hughes Dewees was born February 16, 1831, at Trappe, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was educated at the boarding school of rev. Henry S. Rodenbough of Trappe, and ended his school days with Rev. Samuel Aaron, at Norristown. He chose the profession of civil engineering, assisting in the survey of the Chester Valley R.R., and the Philadelphia & Sundbury R.R, after which he located in Shamokin as a mining engineer, and became agent for several railroad companies. He became interested in the mining of coal at the Lambert, Excelsior and other collieries. After going out of the coal business, he took up the profession of geology, being appointed to a position under Professor Leslie, of the State Geological Survey, where he rendered good service to the State. He died in North Carolina, 12,7,1883."
