Notes for Douglas Brooke GILPIN

D. Brooke Gilpin, formerly of West Chester D. Brooke Gilpin, 89, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014. The son of Douglas and Miriam Gilpin, Mr. Gilpin was raised as a member of the community originally gathered by P.S. Dupont to create and run Longwood, which today exists as Longwood Gardens. Brooke attended and graduated from the George School in 1943. He then served in the US Navy during World War II as a member of the Naval Consruction Battallion in the South Pacific. The "Seabies" were known throughout the military for their capability to travel the seas as sailors, build as construction men, and fight alongside the Marines. After discharge from the Navy, Brooke enrolled in the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, from where he graduated in 1950. He then enjoyed a successful career until retirement with the Curtis Publishing Company, an international leader in the magazine industry which was headquartered in Philadelphia. Brooke resided in Chester County in his youth and returned to West Chester, Pa. in 1964 to raise his family until 1980 when he retired to Cambridge, Md. In 1998 he returned to the Philadelphia area residing in St Davids, Pa. until his death. Mr. Gilpin is survived by his two daughters, Diane Muscarella and Caroline (Carrie) Lawlor, their spouses and four grandchildren, sister Barbara Beddall, and former spouse Beatrice Gilpin. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Franklin Gilpin. A memorial gathering will be held at the Kennett Square Golf and Country Club, 100 East Locust Lane, Kennett Square, PA at 12 noon on Friday, August 29. A private burial will follow at Longwood Cemetery. Memorial donations are welcomed to Charity Chair, Atlantic Indians Trapshooting Association, the 125th anniversary and Castle Building Renovation Fund of the Tau Chapter of Psi Upsilon of Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania, or Ducks Unlimited.org.
