Notes for George Washington WOODWARD
Politician, lawyer and judge from Pennsylvania. Born in Bethany, Pennsylvania, Woodward attended Geneva Seminary (today Hobart and William Smith Colleges) and Wilkes-Barre Academy. He was admitted to the bar in 1830 and practiced in Wilkes-Barre. He served as president judge of the fourth judicial district from 1841 to 1851. He unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1844 and was unsuccessfully nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court by President James K. Polk in 1845. He served as an associate justice in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1852 to 1863 and as Chief Justice from 1863 to 1867. He unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Pennsylvania in 1863 and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1867 to 1871. He unsuccessfully ran for president judge of the eleventh judicial district in 1870. He died while on vacation in Rome, Italy.
