Notes for Martha HEATH

Martha H. Yerkes, formerly of Marshallton Martha H. Yerkes, 88, of Blain, Pa., formerly of Marshallton, died Friday, March 28, 2014 in Harrisburg Hospital with family by her side. She was born June 2, 1925 in Lawrenceville, N.J. She attended Miss Fines School, now Princeton Day School, and graduated from Vassar College in 1945 with a degree in science. She received her masters of geology from West Chester University. She taught science, math and computers at Friends Community School, now West Chester Friends School, from 1963 to 1990. Martha's enthusiasm for learning was evidenced by her love of reading and her zeal for crossword puzzles. This thirst for knowledge opened the world of technology for her, eventually leading her to be a self-taught computer educator. As a Blain Library volunteer, board member and book club member, she continued to share the joys of reading with others. A mentor in both practice and spirit, she lived each day expanding her own world and that of others making her an exceptional teacher, both in and out of the classroom. Martha brought her educational background and her passion for science to every aspect of her life, becoming an often-consulted source of wisdom for baking, cooking, and gardening. Environmentally conscience before it was a trend, she grew only plants native to the area, knew the Latin and familiar names of every plant, and excelled as a gardener. Martha felt very strongly about her Quaker beliefs, and practiced them in her every day living. Her commitment to learning was second only to her devotion to her family. She and her husband of 52 years shared seven children who looked to her for their inspiration and guidance. Meeting challenges with determination and without fear, Martha thrived. Her children, grand children, and great grandchildren were a delight and meant everything to her. They will carry her love and strength in their hearts every day. Surviving are three daughters, Anne Y. Wittkamp of Phila., Mary Y. Adams (Jim) of Blain, Pa., and Tacie Y. Trull (Andy), of Bridgeton, N.J.; four sons, John B. Yerkes (Kathe) of Landenberg, William M. Yerkes (Carol) of West Chester, Robert H. Yerkes (Jenny) of West Chester, and H. Sharpless Yerkes of West Chester; a brother, John (Jack) B. Heath (Patty) of Exeter, N.H.; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband F. William Yerkes, two brothers, Darwin Heath and Harley Willis (Bill) Heath and son-in-law, Charles R. Wittkamp.
