Rice was the pilot of a F4U-4, Aircraft Nr. 97029, Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 212, Marine Air Group 33, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 22, 1951, while on a combat mission of attacking enemy troop positions, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire, it burst into flames, its wing folded over and it crashed. His
remains were not recovered. His family knew him as "Charlie."
