Notes for John Estaugh HOPKINS
HOPKINS JOHN ESTAUGH "JACK", M.D., age 92, passed away quietly at his home on Wed. March 5, 2014. Born in Phila. on Dec. 16, 1921, he was the son of the late Arthur, M.D. and Martha (Carrington) Hopkins.
Jack was a graduate of The Episcopal Academy, Phila., Yale University, New Haven, CT and the University of Pennsylvania Medial School. He served with the U.S. Army of Occupation in Japan with the Army Medical Corps.
After an internship at Pennsylvania Hospital and a residency in general surgery at Lankenau Hospital, Wynne-wood, he continued to practice general surgery at Lankenau from 1950 to 1975. This was followed by eight years of practice in the Emergency Room at Memorial Hospital, Pottstown.
In his younger years, he was a competitive athlete partici-pating in track, soccer, boxing and squash. He stayed fluent in sports news and found inspiration in stories of athleticism of any kind. During his entire life he delighted in anything out-of-doors and marveled at the majestic beauty of nature, in particular the Teton Mountains near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
In 1990, he and his wife, retired to Charleston, SC from Strafford. After 15 years in Charleston, they moved back to Central Pennsylvania to reside full time at their farm near Benton, which they had purchased in 1966. Here he continued to enjoy his many hobbies: hiking, golfing, traveling, horseback riding and working on the farmhouse and its surrounding property.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, the former Mary Bazemore, his love of life is carried on by his three children: Elizabeth Blackstone, San Anselmo, CA, Caroline, wife of Don Shauger and John E. Hopkins, Jr. and his wife Todd, all of Orangeville; eight grandchildren: Lindsey, wife of Brandon Trammell, Katie Blackstone, wife of John Martin, Ross Blackstone, Allison Shauger, wife of John Eshleman; Chris Shauger, Emily Hopkins, Anna Hopkins, Molly Hopkins and one great grandchild Brynn Trammell.
