Notes for Catherine WEBER
Catherine (Kay) Hanway died on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center. At the time of her death she was 108.
Kay was born on Sept. 5, 1905, to Katie Fisher and Amos Eugene Weber of Reading.
Kay was raised in the Milton Mendenhall household near Chadds Ford.
Kay graduated from Kennett Square School in 1922 and from the West Chester Normal School (now West Chester University), where she earned her teaching certificate.
Kay taught at the Chatham and Pennsbury schools prior to her marriage to Franklin Llewellyn (Pete) Hanway on Sept. 17, 1927. Her marriage to Pete Hanway lasted 51 years until his death on June 26, 1978.
Kay was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mendenhall, Pa., where she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of Lend-a-Hand, a member of Ladies Aid, a deacon, an elder, a choir director, and served almost 50 years as the church's organist. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star in West Chester.
Throughout her life she was known by her nephews and nieces, plus countless children and adults, as "Aunt Kay." She was deeply loved for her truly faithful willingness to listen to their problems, give them guidance from her heart, play games with them, share her wonderfully prepared foods plus her cooking knowledge with them - especially cookies - and used her sewing knowledge to sew their clothes plus taught them how to sew.
Kay was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy (Dollie) Weber; and two brothers, Carl and John Weber.
She is survived by her brother, Donald (Buddy) Weber of Adamstown.
There will be a special memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15. The service will be held at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 316 Kennett Pike, Mendenhall.
