Notes for Ellwood Townsend RIGBY
Ellwood T. Rigby passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2014 with family at his side.
Born in Kennett Square, PA to Townsend J. and Edna Rigby, he was raised there and on a farm near Bear, DE. Woody graduated from Middletown High School. During World War II, he served with the Delaware State Guard, guarding POWs at Bethany Beach, DE and rising to the rank of Sergeant. He worked as a machinist for Continental Diamond Fiber, the Budd Company and the Chrysler Corporation, where he was involved in the production of army tanks during the Korean War. He taught himself drafting and worked as a materials estimator and salesman for Newark Lumber Company, Hollingsworth Lumber Company, Lester Lumber and Pike Creek Hardware. He lived for many years in Roseville Park, where he was active in the Civic Association. He was one of the founders of Capitol Trail Little League Football, serving as its first Treasurer in the 1960s. For over 50 years, he was active at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, serving as both Elder and Deacon. He enjoyed woodworking, wood carving, gardening, tatting and crocheting, making charity afghans and sweaters for his church in recent years.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Seth (1945); and his wife, Jeane (1990).
He is survived by his sister, Ruth Campbell; two sons, Wayne (Julie) and Paul (Sandy); four granddaughters, Jane (Andrea), Elizabeth, Kristen and Keri; and two great grandsons, Isiah and Ayden.
The family would like to thank the staff of Main Towers Apartments in Newark, where he lived for the past 10 years and the staff of Christiana Hospital for their compassionate care during Woody's final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend services at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711 on Friday, February 7. A viewing will be held from 11:00AM-12:00PM, with funeral services beginning at 12:00PM. A reception will immediately follow in the church social hall.
Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church.
