Notes for Elsie Whelen LARGE

Elsie Whelen Butterworth, age 80, beloved wife of John Butterworth, died on Wednesday, January 15, at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, her home for the past 12 years. Born in 1933, Mrs. Butterworth was the daughter of James Mifflin Large and Sarah Morris Ellison. She grew up in Valley Forge, attended Shipley School, Westover School, graduating in 1951, Bryn Mawr College, and Rosemont College, earning a degree in Special Education in 1978. She taught at the Agnes Irwin School and later was a teacher and then Director of the Timothy School where she worked with children with autism and related disabilities, both in Bryn Mawr. In 1954, Mrs. Butterworth married John Butterworth of Philadelphia, PA. Having grown up spending summers on the coasts of Florida and Maine, Mr. and Mrs. Butterworth fell in love with the Adirondack Mountains. For more than 50 years she treasured spending time with family and friends at their home in Keene Valley, NY where she was an avid fisherman. Active in the community, Mrs. Butterworth volunteered with the Greater Philadelphia Autism Society, St Christopher's Hospital and Project Hope. She was also active in the Philadelphia Garden Club, the Ausable Club in St. Huberts NY, and Pohoqualine Fish Association. She will be remembered for the unconditional love she shared with everyone she met. She is survived by her husband, her children, John Butterworth Jr. (Joan) of Auburn, MA, David G. Butterworth (Karina) of Bryn Mawr, PA, and Janet M. Balaguer (Roberto) of Portage, MI. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Elizabeth, Matthew, Gardner, John, Henry, Sarah, Katherine, Maria and Anna, and her brothers, James Large and Gordon Large. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 A.M. on January 24, 2014 at St. David's Episcopal Church, 763 South Valley Forge Road , Wayne, PA 19087. There will be a reception at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Beaumont Fund, Beaumont at Bryn Mawr, 601 N Ithan Ave, Bryn Mawr, PA 19010, the Adirondack Trail Improvement Society, P.O. Box 565, Keene Valley, NY 12943, or St. David's Episcopal Church, 763 South Valley Forge Road, Wayne, PA 19087.
