Notes for Carlos L. TOWNSEND
Carlos L. Townsend, 92, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. He grew up in Salisbury, Maryland, where he graduated from Wicomico High School in Salisbury, and later graduated from Goldey College in Wilmington. While attending Goldey, he met his future wife, Doris Catts. They were married on June 6, 1942. He was an Army veteran of a medic ship of WWII and the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal, leaving the Army as a Master Sergeant. He worked as Assistant Manager of Baggage for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail from 1941 until the early 1980's when he retired.
He was a long time active member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served multiple times on the Vestry, and was Treasurer, a teacher and head of the youth group. He celebrated his 55th year as a member of Granite/Corinthian Lodge #34 of Delaware as a 32nd degree Mason . Carlos was also a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory. He was known as "Daddy Carl" to the young ladies at Bethel #1 of the International Order of Jobs Daughters for several years and was an active member of Claymont Chapter 175 AARP where he served as tour director for more than 22 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, of 71 years, his daughters Elizabeth Beck (Jeffrey) , Linda Woodacre (Michael), his son David (Lynn), and grandchildren Drew and David Beck, Cristina Piller and Lisa Mitchell, Paige Jones and Alex Townsend. He is also survived by 4 great grand children.
A Masonic service will be held on Tuesday, January 21st in the chapel of Grace Episcopal Church, 4900 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE at 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service in the main sanctuary at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at a reception in the parish hall following the burial.
