Samuel F. Pennell

Sam ("Popi") Pennell, Age 83 - New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, January 12, 2014.

Born to George and Anna Pennell, Sam was born and raised in "The Baldton" New Castle, DE and lived his entire life in his beloved New Castle. Sam graduated from William Penn High School in 1949, served in the United States Navy from January 1951 to November 1954 and worked at General Motors, B.F. Shaw, ICI Americas and B.E. & K. Sam and June were married on April 7, 1956 and spent their life surrounded by family, splitting their time between their home in New Castle, their boats at Warton Creek Marina and their beach place in Bayshore Park, DE. Sam lived life to the fullest, sky diving, earning his black belt in TaeKwonDo, and completing Bike to the Bay, braving the Polar Bear Plunge, learning to fly an airplane and most of all riding his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycles. Sam was an active member of the Retreads Motorcycle Club, completed a cross country trip to California on his motorcycle in 2000, a trip to Alaska on his motorcycle in 2002 and earned the Iron Butt designation (1,000 miles on a Harley in 24 hours) just before his 80th birthday.

In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by his brothers, William, Ernest and George and his sister, Charlotte. Sam is survived by his wife of 57 years, June (Shultie) Pennell, his sister, Helen, daughter Susan Collett (Dennis) and son Danny Pennell (Sheila). Lovingly known as Popi, Sam will forever live in the hearts of his granddaughters, Denise ("Tootsie") Elliott (Steve) and Devon ("Georgie") Pennell and great granddaughters Addison ("Addie Gump") and Victoria ("Tori") Elliott.

Funeral Services will be celebrated on Friday, January, 17th at 2:00pm at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware Street, New Castle, DE, where family and friends may visit from 12 noon to 2:00pm. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.
