Dorothy S. Bromley 98, of Gladwyne, a retired fashion designer, died Friday, October 25, after a long illness, in the Health Care Center at Waverly Heights, in Gladwyne. Born in New York City, Mrs. Bromley lived in Gladwyne for more than 50 years. She grew up in New York City and in India while it was still a British colony. She returned to the United States for high school and attended Bryn Mawr College. She studied fashion design at Pratt Institute and graduated from Barnard College. She worked as a fashion designer prior to her marriage to William Leake, MD, who moved with her back to his birthplace in the south. She lived with him for many happy years in Lafayette, Louisiana. After her husband's death, she returned to New York City and resumed her career in design. She enjoyed the art, music and her many friends in the city. In 1962, she met and married Henry S. Bromley, Jr, a widower. Initially dividing her time between her work in New York and her home in Gladwyne, she helped her husband raise his two younger sons and was a fun-loving stepmother to her older stepchildren. She was the Treasurer of the Ladies Board of Saint Christopher's Hospital for Children. She attended St. Christopher's Church in Gladwyne with her husband and after his death in 1979 became an enthusiastic congregant and vestry member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont. Mrs. Bromley enjoyed reading, painting, entertaining, and music. She studied piano in New York City and liked learning and playing difficult pieces as well as encouraging young musicians. She is survived by her stepsons; Henry, Bradford, Roger, and Peter Bromley and her stepdaughters Margery Lauber and Rosemary Hubbard as well as her twelve grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd, at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 1st. with a private internment to follow at St. Christopher's Church. Gladwyne.
